David FitzSimmons' Books

Curious Critters Birds

CURIOUS CRITTERS: BIRDS (2019): With stunning close-up photos of common North American birds, Curious Critters: Birds is a fun way to introduce young children to common birds and their calls. (Ages 0-5)

Curious Critters cover

CURIOUS CRITTERS (2011): Enjoy amazing close-up images of twenty-one common yet often overlooked North American animals. Photographed against white backgrounds, their colors, shapes, textures, and seeming personalities shine. Whimsical but educational narratives accompanying each animal highlight fascinating natural history information: a bush katydid explains her bubblegum-pink color, a poetic opossum opines upon her often-shortened name, and a far-from-modest black swallowtail butterfly lets readers in on her secret for avoiding predators. Back matter includes a visual index, additional animal facts, a two-page life-size spread of silhouettes, and a full glossary. With such stunning photography, you'll never see nature the same way again! (Ages 5-10)

Wake Em the Rooster cover

WAKEM THE ROOSTER, UP ALL NIGHT (2017): Wakem the rooster sings beautifully, and his barnyard friends tell him so. Soon, however, Wakem can’t stop crowing late into the night. When Wakem's days and nights become mixed up, the raucous rooster is awake long past bedtime—waking everybody up! While cat and dog offer great tips for improved sleep, it's owl's clever twist on counting sheep that saves the day for Wakem and his barnyard friends. (Ages 4-8)

Salamander Dance cover

SALAMANDER DANCE (2016): Discover the magic of vernal pools—wetlands that fill with water in the spring and dry up in the summer—by following the annual life cycle of spotted salamanders. From shimmering eggs and wriggling larvae to metamorphosis and hibernation, these ephemeral wetlands are alive year-round, but nothing compares to their spectacular springtime Salamander Dance! (Ages 5-10)
