Charles Cassady Jr. has seen horrible things and met grotesque monstrosities that dwell in the inchoate shadows of Ohio's eldritch underworld. In other words, he used to be a movie critic and met showbiz people. It was good training for his nonfiction books, specializing in true ghost stories and legends, general paranormal phenomena, nautical folklore, shipwrecks and marine disasters, true-crime villainy and, most recently, the New Orleans Mardi Gras. The Seven Hills, Ohio, resident wrote his oeuvre mostly at night, in a horse-race camera tower.

Books by Charles Cassady

Mardi Gras in Kodachrome cover

MARDI GRAS IN KODACHROME (2019): The first-ever publication of a collection of Kodachrome slides taken between 1950 and 1960 by the late photographer Ruth Ketcham, preserving in vibrant color the annual New Orleans Mardi Gras. Besides the vivid costumes, floats, and joie de vivre, the precious images preserve a bygone French Quarter of the 1950s, with historic details and flavor that, in the poignant words of many a Dixie resident, "ain't dere no more."

Paranormal Great Lakes cover

PARANORMAL GREAT LAKES (2008): For easy consultation by the curious, here is an A-Z handy listing of supernatural and occult phenomena reported on the Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, Superior, andĀ attendant rivers and estuaries. Known phantom ships, named lake monsters, and charted time-space vortices are just part of the strangest trip you've ever been on.
